A Cool Escape: Exploring the Postojna Caves in Slovenia
After a few days in Ljubljana, where the summer heat peaked at nearly 90 degrees F, my husband and I decided it was the perfect time to escape the city and seek refuge in the cool depths of the Postojna Caves. This is a great option for things to do in Slovenia! Just an hour's journey away from the capital, this incredible natural wonder offered us a refreshing break from the scorching sun and an unforgettable adventure.
We decided to take a midafternoon train and the process was fairly straight forward. We bought our tickets at the station and headed to our track. Be sure to take note of the where the train is headed so you can check the screens for the track. The journey was scenic and peaceful, with the Slovenian countryside rolling by outside our window, as well as the free WIFI. Once we arrived, a 20-minute walk brought us to the entrance of the caves. Despite the heat outside, we knew we’d soon be enjoying a cool 50 degrees underground, which made the walk bearable.
There are various tour options available at Postojna, but we opted for the Queen of Caves tour, which costs 34 euros per person. We were glad to have pre-purchased our tickets online, as this meant we had an assigned time slot for our tour, making the experience smooth and well-organized.
The tour began with a ride on a small train that whisked us into the cave. The train ride, which lasted about 15 minutes, felt a bit like being on a Disney World attraction. As we zipped through tunnels and past stunning formations, we were already in awe of what was to come. The cave walls glistened with moisture, and we could see the first glimpses of stalagmites and stalactites as we went deeper into the earth.
After the train ride, we disembarked and were led by our tour guide on a fascinating hour-long walk through the caves. Each turn revealed something new and extraordinary, from towering chambers to narrow passageways lined with ancient formations. Some of the rooms were vast and cathedral-like, with ceilings that seemed to stretch endlessly above us, while others required us to navigate more carefully due to their tight spaces.
One of the highlights of the tour was reaching a large chamber known for hosting concerts when the cave first opened to visitors over 200 years ago. It’s hard to believe that this incredible place has been welcoming visitors for two centuries! In this chamber, we also discovered a small post office and a gift store, where you can send a letter from within the cave itself—how cool is that?
