Battambang, Cambodia: A UNESCO Food City You Need to visit

Did you know Cambodia has a UNESCO-recognized Creative City of Gastronomy—and it’s not Phnom Penh or Siem Reap? It’s Battambang, a lesser-traveled destination that absolutely deserves a spot on your Cambodia itinerary. Despite having no Michelin-star restaurants, Battambang has quickly become one of the most meaningful and memorable food destinations we visited in the country.

Why Battambang Should Be on Your Cambodia Food Tour

Battambang’s culinary scene is rich, flavorful, and deeply tied to community impact. The food here rivals what we ate anywhere else in Cambodia (and around the world)—yet the city sees only a fraction of the tourism. That’s part of what makes it such a special stop between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Breakfast at Café HOC

Start your morning at Café HOC, one of the most heartwarming and delicious spots in Battambang.

  • Their pancakes and French toast were some of the best we had in Cambodia.

  • If you prefer something savory and traditional, try the rice porridge (so comforting).

But Café HOC is more than just a place to eat. We learned during our visit that the café is part of an organization providing shelter, education, and long-term support for orphaned and at-risk children. Every staff member grew up within the program and continues to carry its mission forward.

This sense of purpose is something you’ll find repeated throughout Battambang’s food scene.

Lunch or Dinner at Jaan Bai

Another standout restaurant is Jaan Bai, known for its incredible Khmer cuisine and modern twists. Some of our favorites included:

  • Jackfruit or oyster mushroom bao

  • Turmeric pork chop

  • Coconut sorbet with honeycomb (don’t skip this!)

Just like Café HOC, Jaan Bai is a social enterprise restaurant supporting at-risk youth and providing employment opportunities for the local community. Dining here feels like being part of something bigger than just a great meal.

A Culinary Destination With Purpose

What makes Battambang so special isn’t just the food—it’s the mission behind it. Many of the city’s top restaurants and cafés are part of community programs focused on education, job training, and supporting vulnerable youth.

Battambang is quickly becoming a rising culinary destination in Cambodia, powered not by fine dining establishments but by passionate locals working together to create memorable, meaningful experiences for both visitors and residents.
