How to Spend a Day in Point Reyes: A Perfect Local Itinerary
We love Point Reyes and it always makes the list of places to visit when we have people visiting West Marin.
Point Reyes National Seashore is one of those California places that feels untouched, peaceful, and timeless. It’s the perfect day trip from San Francisco, Marin, or the North Bay — and the kind of place where each stop feels like a mini adventure. It's worth the drive!
Here’s exactly how to spend a beautiful day in Point Reyes, starting with iconic sunrise photos and ending with a cozy dinner in town.
We've been to Point Reyes many times and the biggest piece of advice LAYERS... it could be sunny all the way to the entrance and all of a sudden fog. Although sunshine is nice, experiencing the fog is also very cool.
1. Start at the Inverness Shipwreck
Begin your day at the famous Inverness Shipwreck — also known as the S.S. Point Reyes. Sure it looks great at sunrise, but let me be honest... I wouldn't know.
Photo tip:
To get the shot, try to capture the reflection of the ship in the shallow water at high tide. Early morning is usually the quietest time, and the still water makes the reflection even better.
It’s an easy stop right behind the Inverness Store parking lot.

2. Grab Lunch in Point Reyes Station
(or pack your own and eat along the coast)
You can either pack a lunch from home or stop in Point Reyes Station, the cutest little coastal town with some true gems:
Local Favorites:
Palace Market – surprisingly amazing sandwiches, fresh ingredients
Bovine Bakery – iconic pastries (lines form early), get the morning buns
Side Street Kitchen – rotisserie chicken, salads, hearty plates
Grab something to go — you’ll want it later at the lighthouse or Drakes Beach.
3. Stop at the Cypress Tree Tunnel
Next, head to the Cypress Tree Tunnel, one of the most photographed spots in all of Marin County. Fun fact - we took our engagement photos here!
It’s gorgeous all day, but especially:
Soft morning light
Late afternoon golden hour
Walk beneath the arching Monterey cypress trees and take your time — it feels like stepping into another world. Walk to the end and check out the old radio building.

4. Visit the Point Reyes Lighthouse
Continue your day by driving out to the Point Reyes Lighthouse, perched on rugged cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. Check the lighthouse hours before going as there is a gate to walk down the stairs.
What to expect:
Lots of wind (honestly part of the vibe), Dramatic views, Historical displays, A walk down steep stairs if the lower viewing deck is open
Even if the stairs are closed due to wind, the viewpoint from the top is incredible. This is one of the windiest places on the west coast — so dress accordingly.
5. Hike Chimney Rock

Just a few minutes from the lighthouse parking lot is the Chimney Rock Trail, an easy, scenic hike that feels like walking along the edge of the world.

Wildflowers in spring
Bird watching
Coastal cliffs

It’s only about 1.75 miles round trip — perfect for a day trip.
6. Go to Drakes Beach
After the lighthouse and hike, head down to Drakes Beach, one of the most serene beaches in Point Reyes.
There’s:
A small visitor center
Clean bathrooms
Picnic tables
Gentle waves
Sometimes tule elk or elephant seals nearby
This is a great spot to enjoy your lunch if you packed one or grabbed food in town.
7. End the Day with Dinner in Inverness or Point Reyes Station
After a full coastal adventure, wrap up with a good meal. Although I haven't ate in Inverness, these are the popular places - Saltwater Oyster Depot, Inverness Park Market.

In Pointe Reyes Station there are a few more options depending on the time of day, but we like Station House.

There is little to no cell service in point Reyes, so plan accordingly
There is a small gift shop at Drake's beach, but plan to have enough water and snacks for the day in case something in closed
