Silk Island (Koh Dach): A Hidden Gem Day Trip from Phnom Penh
If you’re thinking about things to do in Cambodia, don’t miss Silk Island (Koh Dach). Just across the river from Phnom Penh, this peaceful island offers a look at traditional weaving, village life, and a slower pace away from the city’s chaos. It’s one of those underrated spots that deserves a place on your Phnom Penh itinerary.
How to Get to Silk Island
There are a few easy ways to reach Silk Island:
Tuk tuk + car ferry: Hire a tuk tuk driver who can take you to the ferry crossing and even guide you around once on the island.
Bring your own moped or bicycle: Cross the ferry and explore at your own pace.
Rent on the island: After arriving, you can rent a bicycle or moped to cruise around.
We took a tuk tuk to the car ferry and crossed over ourselves, then rented a moped to explore. Since the island is fairly small, this made it easy to see everything in just a few hours.
Exploring Silk Island
The highlight of the trip is visiting the main silk village, where you’ll learn about the entire silk-making process. From silkworms to finished textiles, the process is fascinating—and what makes it even more special is that the community here is female-led.
You’ll see women working on traditional loom machines, weaving scarves, clothing, and other textiles. Visitors can even try weaving themselves (spoiler: it’s not easy!). Getting hands-on with the process was one of the most memorable parts of our Cambodia trip.

Shopping for Silk
Scarves and textiles are available for purchase directly from the weavers. While prices are very affordable compared to U.S. standards, we did notice slightly lower prices for silk in other parts of Cambodia. Still, buying here ensures your money goes straight to the artisans themselves.
Travel Tips for Silk Island
Time needed: 3–4 hours is enough, but you can spend longer if you want a relaxed pace.
Best way to explore: Rent a moped—it’s fun, fast, and gives you freedom.
Bring cash: Most shops don’t take cards.
Combine with Phnom Penh sightseeing: This makes a great break between visiting the Royal Palace or Killing Fields.
