Choosing the Right Angkor Pass
You’ll need to purchase an entrance pass to explore the temples within the Angkor complex. We recommend getting a 3‑day or 7‑day pass instead of the 1‑day option. There’s so much to see—trust us, one day isn’t enough.
When we visited, a 3‑day pass cost $62 USD per person and could be used within 10 days of purchase, giving you flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Getting Around the Temples
The Angkor complex is huge—you won’t be able to walk between temples easily. You have a few great options for getting around:
Hire a tuk‑tuk driver for the day (around $20 USD). We used the same driver throughout our visit, which made things easy and personal.
Join a guided tour or tour bus for convenience and context.
Rent a bicycle or moped if you’re feeling adventurous and want more flexibility.
Each option gives you a different experience, so choose what fits your travel style and comfort level.
Why Hire a Guide
While most tuk‑tuk drivers know the best temple routes, they’re not trained historians. Hiring a licensed local guide—readily available near the entrances—can add depth to your visit. They’ll help you understand the symbolism, stories, and centuries of history that shaped the Khmer Empire.
Dress Code & Cultural Respect
Angkor Wat isn’t just a tourist attraction—it’s a sacred site that still functions as a place of worship. Visitors are expected to dress modestly out of respect for Cambodian culture and Buddhist traditions.
Cover your shoulders and knees. Lightweight pants, midi skirts, or shawls work perfectly.
Avoid revealing or see‑through clothing.
Remove hats when entering temple interiors.
You’ll likely be turned away from certain areas if not properly dressed, so it’s best to plan ahead.
Final Tips
Arrive early—to beat the crowds & the heat. The sunrise at Angkor Wat is a popular destination - although we didn't go to it!
Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and cash for small purchases.
Be mindful of temple etiquette: don’t climb restricted areas or touch carvings.
