5 things to do in Hoi An, Vietnam (Even during rainy season)
If you’re planning a trip to Central Vietnam, you’ll likely be deciding between staying in Da Nang or Hoi An. Since we were visiting during rainy season, we chose Hoi An — and it turned out to be the perfect choice. Even with some showers, this UNESCO World Heritage town swept us off our feet with its charm, character, and color.
Whether you’re backpacking through Vietnam, taking a career break, or just love cultural getaways, here are our top 5 things to do in Hoi An that you shouldn’t miss.
1. Explore Hoi An by Bike
One of the best ways to experience Hoi An’s Old Town and nearby rice fields is on two wheels. Many hotels offer free bicycles, and despite the occasional chaos of motorbikes and traffic, we had a blast cycling around. It’s an eco-friendly, fun way to see the city at your own pace.
2. Get Clothes Tailored in Hoi An
Hoi An is world-famous for its custom tailors. Whether you want a linen suit, a sundress, or something totally unique, you can get it made in just a day or two — often for a fraction of the price you’d pay back home. Pro tip: bring inspiration photos and haggle gently!
3. Ride in a Coconut Boat
We took one of Hoi An’s famous coconut boat tours through the water coconut forests. While we skipped the TikTok-viral spinning boat trick (no regrets), it was still a relaxing and fun way to explore the lush waterways. Not a must-do, but a quirky experience to try!
4. Visit Marble Mountain
Located just outside Hoi An in Da Nang, Marble Mountain is a stunning spot filled with caves, Buddhist sanctuaries, and panoramic views. We visited as part of a half-day tour, and it was well worth it — just bring your walking shoes and plenty of water. The stairs and humidity are no joke!
5. See the Lady Buddha Statue
Also in Da Nang, the Lady Buddha (Linh Ung Pagoda) is one of the tallest Buddha statues in Vietnam and offers sweeping views of the coastline. It’s peaceful, impressive, and a beautiful cultural stop to add to your Hoi An itinerary.
Final Thoughts
Hoi An was the perfect base for this part of our Vietnam adventure — even in the rainy season. While certain parts of the city can feel a bit manufactured or curated for tourists, we still found so much to love. From the warm hospitality and vibrant lanterns to the delicious food and easy day trips, it was a memorable stop on our Southeast Asia journey.
