Exploring Heidelberg: A Perfect Stop in Southwest Germany
Heidelberg is a charming and historic city located in southwest Germany, ideal for travelers heading towards the Black Forest. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply seeking a picturesque stopover, Heidelberg has something for everyone.
If you're wondering what to do in Heidelberg, here's how we spent our day exploring this beautiful town. Remember to pack comfortable walking shoes and plenty of water for your adventure!
1. Start Your Day with a Scenic Stroll on the Philosophenweg (Philosopher's Way)
One of the best ways to begin your Heidelberg visit is with a walk along the famous Philosopher's Way. This scenic trail offers stunning panoramic views across the Neckar River and the entire city, including Heidelberg Castle. It’s a peaceful way to start your day and get your bearings before heading into the Old Town, but if you take the stairs up...be warned it's a trek!

2. Cross the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) into the Historic Old Town (Altstadt)
After enjoying the views from Philosopher's Way, make your way across the Old Bridge, one of the most iconic landmarks in Heidelberg. From here, you can easily explore the cobblestone streets of the Old Town. Take your time wandering through the narrow alleys, where you'll find charming shops, cafés, and historic buildings.
For lunch, stop at one of the local eateries to recharge before your afternoon adventure. We ended up enjoying Middle Eastern Food at Mahmoud's Altstadt.
3. Explore Heidelberg Castle (Schloss Heidelberg)
Next, head to Heidelberg Castle, perched on a hill above the town. You can either walk up the steps (for a bit of a workout) or take the funicular railway for a more relaxed journey (there may be a line so look into tickets ahead of time). Once at the top, explore the castle grounds and gardens—don’t forget to bring some snacks and a blanket to rest in the gardens while soaking up the views!
Heidelberg Castle is not only a remarkable piece of history but also offers some of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding area. If you have time, consider visiting the castle museum or taking a guided tour to learn more about its fascinating past.
