The Best Viewpoint on Cát Bà Island (Maybe in All of Vietnam)

One of the most unforgettable viewpoints in all of Vietnam sits at the top of Cát Bà National Park. The hike is steep and challenging, but the reward is panoramic views of dense green mountains, limestone karsts, and the entire island stretching out around you.

Before you start the climb, here’s a pro tip: don’t lose your entrance ticket. It also grants access to the caves just up the road, and they’re absolutely worth visiting after your hike.

What the Hike Is Really Like

The moment you walk through the park entrance, you’ll pass what look like abandoned buildings—old science labs that give the beginning of the trail an eerie, atmospheric feel.

Then the climbing begins. And yes… it’s steep. Really steep. Make sure to stop at the small restaurant by the trailhead for a cold, fresh coconut before you start—trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

As you make your way through the forest, keep your eyes open for wildlife. You might spot: soaring hawks, deer moving quietly through the trees and if you’re extremely lucky, a golden-headed langur—one of the most endangered primates in the world... although we did not see one!
 

The Viewpoints

The first major viewpoint is the perfect place to take a break, rehydrate, and enjoy the scenery. From here, you’re halfway to the top.

That final climb? Tough—but absolutely worth it. The peak offers breathtaking 360° views that make Cát Bà one of the most underrated hiking destinations in Vietnam.

How Long the Hike Takes

Expect the full hike—up, down, and a few breaks—to take around three hours or less, depending on your pace.

This is one of the most memorable things you can do on Cát Bà Island, and a must-add to your Vietnam itinerary.
