Panhou Retreat Review: The Best Eco-Resort in Ha Giang, Vietnam
If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam and want a hotel experience that feels truly unforgettable, this property needs to be on your list. It’s a little difficult to reach — but absolutely worth it. It's located in Giang Village, Hoang Su Phi District, Tuyen Quang Province, where most people do the famous Ha Giang loop - about 263 kilometers from Hanoi.
In fact, it’s one of the most relaxing and memorable hotels we stayed at during our entire trip, and it has the awards and reputation to prove it. Literally, Panhou Retreat was honored as Asia's Leading Green Resort 2025 by the World Travel Awards - making it one of the best eco resorts in Vietnam.

Immersed in Nature (With a Touch of Luxury)
From the moment you arrive, you feel like you’ve stepped into a different world. The hotel sits surrounded by misty mountains, lush rice paddies, and endless green. You wake up to quiet mornings overlooking the fields and walk past gardens on your way to a full breakfast buffet.
It’s peaceful, immersive, and one of the rare places where you feel completely removed from the busyness of Vietnam’s major cities. Panhou is also a true eco resort and champion in eco tourism.
The Best Part: Hiking the Rice Terraces With a Local Guide
If you stay here, don’t skip the guided hike. It was one of the best experiences of our entire Vietnam trip.
Your local guide leads you: up the mountains, across waterfalls, through farms and village paths and ultimately to the very top of the rice terraces
The views from the top are absolutely incredible — endless green waves of rice fields with valleys carved by generations.
On the way down, we stopped at a local villager’s home for lunch — simple, comforting, homemade Vietnamese food that tasted even better after a long hike. This gave us an opportunity to learn about the Red Dao ethnic group, not only during the hike, but in conversations with the hotel staff.
End Your Day in the Hot Springs
After returning to the hotel, we headed straight for the hot springs, soaking while looking out at the mountains as the sun set. It was the perfect way to end the day before heading to dinner.
Why This Hotel Is Worth the Journey
Even though it’s tucked away in the mountains and requires some travel to get to, this hotel is consistently recognized as one of the best hotels in Vietnam for a reason:

If your Vietnam itinerary includes Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Giang, or Ninh Binh, this hotel makes an incredible slow-down stop between adventures.
A Few tips for Visiting Panhou:
Make sure you include at least breakfast and dinner as part of your meals. We did A La cart for lunch and that worked out perfect for us as we weren't super hungry at lunch time and could order something light. The dinners were a set menu and we really enjoyed trying so many new things - we honestly would not have had the chance to try such a variety of food without this.
It is a far journey, but worth it. On the way there we were able to use their hired van from Hanoi (here are some tips for what to do in Hanoi) and that worked out perfect. On the way back, they hired us a driver to take us to the main town and from there we had pre-arranged a bus. We did get on the wrong bus at first, but thankfully our bus driver called us and it worked out! The journey from the resort to the main town is VERY bumpy and curvy ... so bring motion sickness medicine.
There is not much else to do in the area (i.e walking to a resturant), but you can arrange tours with the resort directly. They even have multi-day treks.
This was a bit of a splurge on our trip in comparison to a typical Vietnam budget... but it was the perfect way to spend Kaylina's birthday!
